Many people agonize about the safeness of feeding their dog peanut butter. The foundation for this concern is perhaps due to the stories we have read about nuts being dangerous for dogs. This is in fact true, various types of nuts, are extremely hazardous for dogs. These include the Macadamian and walnut, just to name a couple.
Some issues with nuts include the levels of toxicity they can cause over time and the large phosphorus content which may cause kidney failure, bladder issues and even death. The same might hold true for chocolates containing nuts.
There is great news for those of us that like to use peanut butter as an aid in giving medication, rewarding our dogs with peanut butter dog snacks or just sharing a bit on the tip of our finger. Peanuts are not actually nuts! In fact, peanuts are decidely a species in the legume family (Fabaceae) to be specific. In other words, peanuts are actually a type of bean!
That being said, dogs may have food allergies just like humans. As with any untested food item, it must be fed in moderation and stopped if an allergic reaction is suspected. Although there are many helpful nutrients in peanut butter, it is also high in calories. If you are concerned about preservatives, consider organic brands which can also be lower in sugar.
In summary, peanut butter is not known to be dangerous for dogs. Like any food or dog treats we give our dogs, we should look at the label and consider the additional ingredients used in the preparation process. This is exciting news for my dogs since they love a KONG(R) filled with peanut butter from the freezer.
