Golden Retriever Giving Birth/Whelping

by Admin on July 11, 2009

This was Kida’s first beautiful litter of puppies. She did very well and was an excellent mother. The labor went beautifully, and all puppies turned out amazing.

ummm that suction ball your talking about im soon going to get a golden retriever which im excited for and when she grows up an has her first litter if its to hard to help could you give them to a vet and watch them having birth instead of you doing it but if it is kinda easy then i would do it in my house but if it kinda hard i would go to a vet place for help so which is kinda easier?

how long did this took u?

AngelWings3 April 1, 2009 at 7:17 pm

Her labor took about 8-12 hours. The hard labor anyway. Dogs go through 3 stages of labor. The hard labor is the most noticeable.

JustxAnotherxCut April 11, 2009 at 3:02 pm

is it really necessary to get involved or can u just supervise every now and then?

AngelWings3 April 11, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Honestly, it really depends on the female.
This female in particular needed assistance a few times, which were the times I took the vid’s as well. My most recent birthing needed 100% assistance.
But I weigh all my pups when they’re born and so forth. I keep track of how long she is in labor, time between each puppies, the time each pup was born, weight etc, so yah, I involve myself every time.

JustxAnotherxCut April 16, 2009 at 12:49 pm

Okay thanks. How much time can there be between each puppy?

AngelWings3 April 16, 2009 at 4:40 pm

5 minutes, and up to two hours.

AngelWings3 April 16, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Her delivery took around 10 hours. The hard labor anyway.

This was such a joy to watch! Thank you for sharing. We have a German Shorthaired Pointer who is expecting her first litter the end of June. I’ve read a lot about the delivery, but it was so helpful and reassuring to watch your video. You seem so calm and relaxed and the environment so peaceful for her. I’m sure I’ll watch it again many times before we face this ourselves next month! Thank you!

Hey there. I am glad to hear my video has been helpful. I have a second video that you can watch as well of my most recent litter. It’s the video response to this video. Check it out :) You might like it. And if you have any questions about whelping a litter, feel free to message me any time! I’ll be here if you need :)

Thank you!! :) Clearly you’re getting to be old hat at this stuff! Love the Skype idea. So, I do have a question about the placement of the whelping box. My husband and I were considering putting this in our room where her sleeping crate is, but would this be insane with the pups noise? Or would we move it after the first week or so? She has her kennel outside where she stays during the day, but she doesn’t sleep there at night so I’m hesitant to put it there. Any suggestions? Thanks again!

oh wow! That was amazing! Do you live with a partner? If so, did he help deliver the pups or did you?
