Proper Weimaraner Training A Must For Success With This Breed

by Paul Jamieson on September 3, 2010

The Weimaraner, and attractive and sturdy breed, was bred as a hunter of large animals. This is an active dog, and must have an active and attentive owner. Personality disorders are quite common in Weimaraners, and while not every owner will have issues with this trait, it is important to be aware that it is possible. Proper Weimaraner training will help to control these issues, and help them become well adjusted to their home.

This is a high energy dog that requires frequent exercise on a daily basis. They are easily excitable, and can easily knock people over if overexcited. They are not an appropriate breed for homes with small children. Weimaraners love to play, and will tirelessly chase a ball for hours. Keeping them active is imperative.

These natural hunters are relentless in their pursuit of prey. They will attempt to over run and kill small animals such as squirrels, and should never be kept with cats or small dogs. This drive is not the emergence of a personality disorder, but a natural trait of the dog, and cannot always be controlled, even with training.

This dog was also bred as a guard for property and possessions. One of the undesirable personality disorders that can present itself is an possessiveness that could pose a danger to visitors. They can unexpectedly become aggressive and attempt to dominate anyone that they are unfamiliar with.

Separation anxiety is another common trait of the Weimaraner. They should never be kept in a kennel or left outdoors for extended periods. This behavior can become neurotic, and can also lead to the destruction of furnishings and other items. This can be prevented by leaving the dog alone for only very short periods at a time, and of course, exercising frequently. Failure to do this can result in a ruined home and quite possibly, injuries to the dog.

Extensive training can help socialize and make these dogs more manageable. They are quick and eager to learn and love to please their owners. Training strengthens the bond between dog and owner, and can help in building a strong, trusting relationship.

If an owner is able to provide lots of exercise and training, this smart and beautiful breed can be a very loyal animal. Working with the dog to help keep personality traits under control will help with a successful lifelong bond.
