Do you consider big name dog food brands to be made with the best dog food ingredients? After studying the matter I’ve come to the conclusion that people are aware of a brand not because it’s particularly healthy but because it’s a brand that can afford some heavy advertising.
Sadly the best dog food for your dog is probably not even being sold in your Vets office. Most Vets sell Science Diet and it does not even come close to making my top ten best dog food list.
I have done many hours of research trying to find out how to pick the best dog food, ever since my Beagle started having Seizures. I learned more about how to read a dog food label, and decipher what those ingredients really are then most people do for human food.
With more research I learned a lot more about the importance of healthy ingredients in dog food.
I quickly realized if I was going to be able to find the best dog food for my dogs, I was going to need to educate myself about the Pet food industry.
The laws are weak and the industry is basically self regulated, allowing deceptive wording on labels and fooling pet owners into thinking they are buying nutritional value where none exists.
There is no law to assist us for selecting most suitable dog food apart from the law that makes it compulsory to mention the contents on label in descending order of weight of ingredients. If corn is the initial ingredient listed it is the largest component of the product regardless of what it is called.
The best thing to do is skip over the name on the bag and go straight to the ingredient list. After you make it through the first couple of ingredients that you think you understand what they are, that is where the fun begins.
Some of the top brand dog foods, use dried egg products as one of their ingredients, this not the same as using eggs. You would find what’s in dried egg product very sickening to eat so why feed it to your dog. When something contains chicken by-products is is not of the standard you would serve on your dinner table.
Though some of the listed ingredients are self explanatory, there are preservatives and vitamins added that may be unnecessary and hard to identify.
The main reason for me being pleased that at initial stage of my study; I could get a rigid guide telling what one must check on labels of packed dog foods and I have been following the same to choose best food for my pet dog.
With this guide I have been able to go through a list of 150 brands of dog food, and come up with the best dog food top ten list. It is very obvious once you compare the ingredient list of the 10 best dog food to the brands your Vet probably sells, that you probably shouldn’t be depending on your Vet for a healthy dog food selection.
